Hovik Abrahamian, the Firebrand Revolutionary?

WHAT DID TOROSSIAN FEAR MOST?

http://www.a1plus.am/en/?page=issue&iid=64141

In its September 16 sitting the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) confirmed its decision to nominate Hovik Abrahamian as Speaker of the National Assembly.

In reply to A1+ whether it is expedient to nominate a candidate having a low rating, HHK MP Edward Sharmazanov said: “Let me disagree with you. It is your subjective opinion. Even such “outstanding figures” as Robespierre, Denton, Charles de Gaulle or François Mitterrand were accepted with certain reservations.”

Asked whether Hovik Abrahamian ranks among those prominent figures Sharmazanov gave a hasty answer: “Not at all. I didn’t draw parallels.”

Yesterday NA Speaker Tigran Torossian announced he has some controversies with the HHK in view of some political issues. Torossian also advised those who worry about his fate to take their 30 silver and go along their path.

“Tigran Torossian has always voted for the HHK decisions, and everyone knows his stance on all issues. All controversies are revealed during the vote. It is the first time I hear Tigran Torossian have controversies with his fellow colleagues,” says Sharmazanov.

Asked whether Torossian was afraid to divulge the truth Sharmazanov said in utter bewilderment: “What is there to be afraid of? During the years of his tenure Torossian proved that he fears nothing. We live in a democratic country where 350 thousand people rally in the capital streets shouting and screaming. /He meant people shouting “Levon, President”/ (Ed. Note: Really? That many, huh?)

Edward Sharmazanov says he is sorry that Tigran Torossian has expressed in this way since it is not correct. Tigran Torossian must be highly emotional which explains his evaluations. With regard to Tigran Torossian’s decision to resign from the HHK ranks and the HHK parliamentary faction, Edward Sharmazanov says they respect everyone’s decision. Torossian was elected to the Parliament on the Republican ticket, but it will not hinder Tigran Torossian to remain a deputy after resigning from the Party, especially that Torossian was the second on the list. Tigran Torossian had a significant contribution to the number of votes the Party got during the parliamentary election.

Hundreds like Torossian in the Government

Bruce Tasker's picture

Today, there are hundreds like Torossian in the Government who can no longer stomach the regime they are obliged to work for, to put clothes on their children's backs and food in their bellies, and they would gladly leave if they had another option.

Let us hope that he has taken this step as a matter of principle and he will tell all he knows about the way the Republicans and their coalition partners continually abuse their authority. Otherwise we must assume he has done what other have done before him, taken the money and agreed to keep quiet.

Interesting take on this from Azerbaijan

Resignation of the Armenian Parliament’s Speaker Tigran Torosyan was initiated by the central body of the Armenia’s governing Republic Party.

The statements that it is inefficient to keep Torosyan at the position of the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, disguised by unpleasant rumours of private character, in fact are plain demonstration of a split in the Armenian political establishment, demonstrating a crisis in the relations between the powerful Armenian diaspora and administration of the country.

The conflict is based on foreign political orientation of the official Yerevan.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, representing the powerful Karabakh military and political group, is not the most popular politician of the country and is categorical pursuer of pro-Russian policy. On the contrary, international Armenian diaspora believes Russia’s resources have expired and further going along with the northern neighbour, which is waging war with the West, damages the national interests of Armenia.

That is the very concept lying in the basis of Armenian political opposition, which is intensively gaining weight. Tigran Torosyan was one of the victims of the growing crisis.

Genesis of the confrontation between the authorities and opposition in Armenia, taking into consideration the factual account of country’s newest political history, is fraught with bloody distemper. The Karabakh clan, which came to power in Armenia through a military upheaval, a priori cannot be overthrown by a free will of voters.

So this is what the Parliament Speaker's job is...

From Armenian Liberty's news roundup: http://www.armenialiberty.org/press/press/en/2008/09/9C0EC2CC-7EFA-4396-...

Ashot Aghababian, a parliament deputy from the governing Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), tells “Hayk” that Tigran Torosian stepped down as parliament speaker because he could not do his job properly. “You can’t do it only about knowing the law and speaking well,” he says. Aghababian complains that Torosian never invited him to weddings or other parties and never helped fellow parliamentarians who got in trouble.

“Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” reports that Torosian looked confused and lost after announcing his resignation at a parliament session on Friday. The paper says pro-government parliamentarians were in high spirits after that. “They were joking, loudly giggling in the canteen and waiting for the announcement of a few more votes,” says.

According to “Hayk,” HHK deputies were particularly jubilant about Torosian’s decision to quit without a fight.

“Hraparak” says Hovik Abrahamian, the newly elected parliament deputy who is tipped to replace Torosian, has yet to be seen in the National Assembly. “They say that he wants to enter the National Assembly as a parliament speaker and does not want to take the seat of a rank-and-file deputy,” claims the paper.
