Aliev wins the 2008 presidential elections in a bigger Landslide (90%) than Sargsyan (53%).

Exit polls in Azerbaijan show incumbent Ilham Aliyev
sweeping to a widely expected victory in controversial presidential
elections that major opposition parties boycotted.

Hundreds of
his supporters celebrated in the streets as exit polls Wednesday showed
Mr. Aliyev winning more than 85 percent of the vote.

Authorities
announced a voter turnout of nearly 76 percent, even after leading
opposition parties urged their followers to stay home.

The
opposition has accused Mr. Aliyev's government of jailing independent
journalists and rigging the election. Most of the remaining six
candidates on the ballot were considered government loyalists.

The opposition also accused Western governments of not pressing energy-rich Azerbaijan to implement democratic reforms.

Mr. Aliyev's government touted the election as the most democratic in the country's 17-year post-Soviet history.

Alieyev - 89%

Կարեն Կարապետյան's picture

Azerbaijan doesn't stop surprising me. Even in the most absurd and rubber-stamped elections in Middle Eastern and African regimes in 20th century didn't give 89% to the incumbents. I guess in contemporary Azerbaijan in the midst of oil vertigo riding the hypes of the bubbled up Western financial markets, playing with percentage digits is like playing with pocket change.

What is the greatest percentage ever obtained?

Hripsime Tavitian's picture

I wonder what is the greatest landslide (in terms of percentages) ever recorded in the first round? Has there ever been over 90%??? If not, than Aliev with 89.04% could soon be in the Guiness Book Of Records ;)

I'll google some more, but I think Aliev has just set a world record!!!

98.8%

Hi Hripsime,

you are welcome to my article on this and previous Azerbaijani non-elections http://yandunts.blogspot.com/2008/10/azerbaijans-anti-election.html.

The highest % recorded in Az. was 98.8% with 90% turnout claimed in 1993 for Aliyev Sr.
