Perhaps if the US Diaspora had not merely appeased obvious goons and clowns over the years or focused only on Genocide recognition, there might be a chance of a future Armenia.  Now we'll witness what everyone (except perhaps the American-Armenian) has foreseen all along:  a sell-out of the Genocide and of Karabagh as well as complete Russian annexation.

Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will
mediate a frozen conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the
disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, as he seeks to boost Russia's
influence in the South Caucasus.

``In the near future, there should be a meeting of the three
presidents,'' he said during an official visit to the Armenian
capital Yerevan today, in remarks published by state broadcaster
Vesti-24. ``This meeting will take place in Russia.''

Armenia is Russia's closest ally in the South Caucasus, a
region to which Medvedev is making his first trip since the Russian
army fought a war with Georgia in August. Medvedev and his Armenian
counterpart, Serzh Sargsyan, are meeting for the fifth time this
year.

Medvedev cited ``Georgian aggression'' for provoking the five-
day war, which started when Georgian troops entered the separatist
region of South Ossetia on Aug. 7 to try to reclaim it and ended
after the Russian army went in the next day to expel them.

``The August events have shown that complex problems must be
resolved starting from international principles, on the basis of
international negotiations,'' he said. ``Nothing else can lead to a
positive outcome. That's one of the most important lessons of the
crisis in the Caucasus.''

Unresolved Dispute

Nagorno-Karabakh is located entirely within Azerbaijan,
occupying about a fifth of its territory, and has a mainly ethnic
Armenian population. It declared self-rule in 1991, sparking a
three-year war between Azerbaijan and Armenia that killed an
estimated 30,000 people and drove about 1 million people from their
homes. A cease-fire was declared in 1994 and the dispute remains
unresolved.

The former Soviet republic of Armenia doesn't border
Russia, from which it's separated by Georgia and Azerbaijan. As it
has no diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan, all of its trade
with Russia, its main foreign trade partner, is routed through
Georgia.

Russian-Armenian trade rose 13 percent in the first eight
months of this year compared with the same period in 2007, reaching
$536.5 million, the Kremlin said in a statement
yesterday. Russia has invested more than $1.6 billion in Armenia
since the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, the statement said. Of
that, $428 million was invested in the first half of 2008.

Medvedev and Sargsyan appeared together at a ceremony to rename
a central Yerevan square `Russia Square.' Medvedev hailed the move
``as a mark of respect to modern, democratic Russia and its
people.''

Are they renaming Azatutyan hraparak or Republican square???

Կարեն Կարապետյան's picture

what da...???? Are they renaming the Azatutyan hraparak or the Republican square??? And what... it's gonna be called "Russkie Square" now? This is just lame!!! The urban surrounding are going to become as artificial and pompous as the political environment. Did they ask what Yerevantsis think about such a move?

In front of the Mayors office

No, the square in question is the one in front of the Mayors office, where the bloody events of the 1st March took place. Or according to some - didn't took place

ha... I wonder if Medvedev knows

ha... I wonder if Medvedev knows in detail what took place on that square. I wonder if he saw the videos? If not haunted, that square is damned...
I suspect they didn't rename the Azatutyan Hraparak (or "Taterakan Hrapaak" (Square of the Spectacle) as Kocharian called it refering to the Soviet title) only because it's reserved to be renamed after Putin, as "Putain Square".

March 1 and squares

There were no clashes at Miasnikian square, where there was a demonstration. Don't know how familiar you are with Yerevan, but the March 1-2 clashes took place up along Lusavorich, Mashtots and Paronian streets - all ten deaths occurred in that area rather that at Miasnikian from which police pulled back mid-day on March 1. Miasnikian served as the rear for the protestors/rioters where they could get fired up with Pashinian propaganda, prepare Molotoff cocktails and generally take a smoke/piss break in between fights with police.

Don't know if there was a master plan but protestors were pushing police back in general direction of presidential residence on Proshian and Bagramian Ave. where Parliament and Presidency are located. They were stopped by riot police on Paronian near Leo street.

And soon after most resistance ended as army began to come in around 11PM - believe it or not many protestors/rioters thought army was coming in to overthrow Kocharian since they were told repeatedly by LTP and others that "Gen. Manvel & co. were with the people" or in other words would side with them.

Re: this square business - sure it sounds stupid, but common around the world.

I guess the que is taken from the "Square of France" which is a section of the Opera/Theater/Freedom/Squatting square inaugurated during Jacques Chirac's visit to Armenia in 2006.

In this case "Squre of Russia" too is only a section of the Miasnikian square.

There is also, believe it or not, the Square of Uruguay near Nairi Hospital off Proshian. My guess is that's because that country was first in the world to recognize genocide. (They were also the first to win the World Cup, btw. :-))

I am sure they'll find nice spots for "Square of America" if our next President Barack Obama will ever visit.
