Ninety Four years on and the US is eventually on the verge of recognizing the first Genocide of the 20th century; essentially full international recognition. The top three figures in the new American administration have over the years repeatedly committed their support to US recognition, and now it is all but a foregone conclusion.
To add to Turkey’s apparent troubles, prior to President Obama’s January 20th inauguration, Prime Minister Recep Erdogan angered its staunchest anti-genocide supporter, by referring to Israel’s attack on Gaza as “savagery” and a “crime against humanity”. Israel responded by threatening to withdraw its traditional support to Turkey in the long-standing Genocide debate.
Realizing the impending danger, Turkey’s President Gul, Prime Minister Erdogan and Minister of Foreign Affairs Babacan have each been working feverishly with the Obama administration; the Turkish media has been overwhelmed with news of their efforts to escape this year’s seemingly inevitable US recognition. Turkey’s argument is that the relationship with Armenia has developed remarkably since last September, when President Gul took the initiative and joined his Armenian counterpart to watch football in Armenia; US intervention would be counterproductive at this time.
From the Armenian side, the Diaspora continues its persistent decades-long lobbying in the US Congress and Senate, now ably supported by Armenian intellectuals and public figures who consider an open letter to the Turkish President could bring him around to the Armenian way of thinking.
But where are the Armenian partners of the newfound Turkish / Armenian friendship society?
Armenia’s President Sargsyan and his MFA Nalbandian insist at home that they will do nothing to jeapardise US recognition of Armenia’s Genocide. But why has Serzh Sargsyan not been writing to President Obama, pressing him to stand by his promises to recognize Armenian Genocide?; why is Armenia’s media not filled with stories of Eduard Nalbandian phoning Secretary of State Clinton?; why is Tigran Sarkissian not pressing Joe Biden? The answer, because they are too busy burdening future generations with billions of dollars of debt, from any source and on terms and conditions the people are not permitted to know, in return for their ‘Karabakh Deal’. But more despicably, they continue with plans to establish their team of historians, who will have no other option but to decide that the Turkish Genocide of one and a half million Armenians never actually happened.
Of course, at this time of international financial crisis the US will not welcome more unnecessary problems, domestically and with its strategic partners. There is no need for the US to decide in favor of Armenia on this most inconvenient issue; it knows the Armenian regime has well conceived plans to resolve the problem bi-laterally with its Turkish friends.
So when this 24th April has passed and President Obama has not spoken those hallowed words ‘Armenian Genocide’; Armenia do not blame President Obama or the US administration for once again reneging on their promises – blame the Armenian regime for negotiating a deceitful and despicable alternative resolution, with complete contempt for Armenia’s historic pain, but as usual to satisfy their self-serving needs.

Every calendar year start from January, Turkish political media increase their activities in Middle East....they hope that US Government will listen to Turkey's "good will" intention toward a peaceful resolutions. Turks do not understand, their double standard position regarding their "goodwill" resolutions in the West.
Turks have to forget, if they have influence in Middle East or any where in this world.
The destruction, that they have created specially in M.E. is not forgotten yet, Israel can not trust Turkey's double standard as a Muslim friend in Middle East.
Turkey can not be a Jews or Christians friend or work for a peaceful resolutions with them. Turkey historically never support a Jewish State in Middle East, but Palestinians.
All these Turkish "good will" intention is based on "Armenian Genocide Recognition" by US and Western World, when the time is ticking toward April 24, each year, political activities of Turkey sky rocketing, they love to bury their ancestral committed Genocide toward Armenians, and other Christian population of Ottoman Turkey, but how much longer??

“Within a month there will be some tangible progress in the Armenian and Turkish relations and after a year or a year an a half a positively accented approach towards the opening of the border will be shaped,” stated the head of the republican parliamentary faction Galust Sahakyan.
The improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations is determined by the question whether Turkey recognizes the Armenian Genocide or not.

By Paul Richter, LA Times, March 17, 2009
US administration officials are considering postponing a presidential statement, citing progress toward a thaw in relations between Turkey and neighboring Armenia. Further signs of warming -- such as talk of reopening border crossings -- would strengthen arguments that a U.S. statement could imperil the progress.

After waiting for the opening of the border for 16 years, Armenia could surely afford to wait a few more days!
Reliable sources report that Armenia and Turkey will be signing an agreement when Foreign Minister Ali Babacan visits Yerevan on April 16,one would hope that Armenian officials would delay signing any document with Ankara just before April 24. The Armenian leadership will not only desecrate the memory of the Armenian martyrs, but will provide the perfect excuse to the Obama administration not to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide in April.

"He writes that the announcement last weekend that US President Barack Obama would be visiting Turkey soon was a de facto signal to many here and in Diaspora that recognition of the Armenian Genocide will not be a priority of the new Washington administration".
Hughes comments on the importance of the Genocide issue for Turkey and covers how "on March 10, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), joined by Representative George Radanovich (R-CA) and the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, Representatives Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL), sent a letter to the president, encouraging him to remain steadfast in his support of recognition".

Wouldn't it be interesting if Nalbandian would trying something truly, breathtakingly new, attempting to tell the truth (sigh, too much to ask). Lragir has a hilarious take on his statement about the U.S. State Department report (I'll link it just in case it finally works): http://www.lragir.am/src/index.php?id=politics&pid=13435
[...]
I wonder whether the Americans know that the State Department does not express the official Washington’s stance. If they do not, they should follow attentively Edward Nalbandyan’s speeches and they will be able to perceive completely the structure of their government. Perhaps, they will get to know that the reports of the State Department are just registered concerts: who will order an opinion will be included in the State Department report for a certain sum, sure the State Department is not obliged of giving a cash register ticket. The official Washington may not have paid to the State Department for an opinion this year, which is why the report did not express its stance. The Armenian foreign ministry had better tell a few words on whose stances were there in the report. Just for interest. Those may be Ilham Aliev’s personal opinions. Who knows? Sure we should know everything about it for public not to dispose against the U.S. because of the State Department, just because of a misunderstanding. After all, the U.S. gave us an assistance of 2 billions since the independence. The point is that it is not enough to say that this is not the official stance of the U.S. in order to disperse the public’s doubts. Meanwhile, the Armenian society cannot permit groundless suspects towards a country like the U.S.

Regarding the US State Department, if we look at the reports on the various Bryza positions, in Ankara, Baku and Yerevan, maybe the Armenian regime has some reason to believe the State Department will report what they want, rather than the truth. We will soon see how the Obama administration intends to operate; hopefully better than the US republican administration - it couldn't be much worse.

In response to Dany Beylerian - Have there been attempts to contact the Armenian side? What are their views?
The only reported contact between the Armenian administration and the US was a telephone conversation when 18th March Secretary of State Hilary Clinton called President Sargsyan, after her trip to Ankara. Armenian state television proudly reported the event, but the genocide issue gave way to Armenian requests for more US financial assistance.
In order for the Armenian / Turkish border to be opened, one of Turkey’s continued and repeated demands is that Armenia retracts its claim of genocide and agrees to a longstanding Turkish proposal for a commission of historians to study the matter. The Armenian regime increasingly expresses its confidence that the Armenian / Turkish border will soon be opened, but Armenia's MFA Eduard Nalbandian has never explained how the genocide issue has been resolved. Moreover, he interestingly states that genocide has never been discussed with Turkey. (http://armradio.am/news/?part=pol&id=14619)
Genocide recognition is the single most important issue for all self-respecting Armenians. But the Armenian public has no voice in this matter. The Armenian position is negotiated by the Sargsyan regime, and according to the Turkish press he has agreed to sign the document to establish the commission of historians just prior to the 24th April.

Impressive letter from Rustamyan. He however knows as well as anyone what the right hand is doing; the Dashnaks in Armenia have been toeing the regime line throughout the Kocharian term and 'till now throughout the Sargsyan term.
If this is indeed a sincere appeal from Rustamyan, then it is an encouraging sign that the Dashnaks might at last be feeling somewhat embarrassed for being a part of the treachery that is going on in Armenia.
But I would tend to believe that it is nothing more than a repeat of what they have become too used to doing - guarding their backs for the flack the regime will undoubtedly (hopefully) face when the entire sordid affair becomes public knowledge. By then of course it will be too late, the dirty deed will have been done.

.. the two sides have now agreed on a sweeping package that includes opening a shared border closed since 1993, beginning diplomatic relations and setting up a bilateral intergovernmental commission on issues ranging from customs, tax and public health to history.
Turkey is also expected to release a “road map” on a solution on Nagorno-Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan that has been under de facto Armenian control since 1994. “The parameters of the deal are very much set,” said Hugh Pope, the Turkey project director for "International Crisis Group", which is currently working on a report about Turkish-Armenian relations.
“The only thing holding things back now is nerves.”
Analysts in Yerevan said the two governments have tentatively agreed to reveal the package on April 16th, when Turkey’s foreign minister is expected to fly to Yerevan for talks. Senior Turkish foreign policy officials refused to confirm the date.

But Ruben Safrastyan covers only the first and most immediate Turkish problem, which by all accounts Turkey has resolved. The second Turkish problem is that the genocide issue must be resolved "Once and for All", which essentially means Armenian capitulation, seemingly through the establishment of the commission of historians.
It appears that Turkey has already achieved what it needed with the Armenian regime, and hence with the US. But will Turkey stand by the package of compensation it has promised in return - to open the border, to deliver humanitarian supplies, to purchase electricity, to invest in a new nuclear power plant - and no doubt much more?

According to the statement (by ANC), Sargsyan put interests of the country at the international 'auction'. As for the Karabakh conflict, it may be resolved either via signing of an unfavorable for Armenia document or disastrous war. 'Having agreed to the absurd proposal of Turkey to set up a commission of historians on the problem of the Armenian genocide, Sargsyan in fact called into question the fact of the Genocide and by this he kept other state from recognition of the Armenian Genocide', - the statement says.

It should be very clear to the leaders of Armenia and the USA that the issue of recognition of the Genocide is an issue that must be addressed for what it is, a fact of history.
Any attempt to defer recognition with mention of progress on trade, border status or whatever does not negate the issue of recognition. It would be a case of side stepping the truth. Just listen to Obama's explicit promise to recognize the Genocide, and compare with what he says on 24 April. This from a man that wrote a book and bothered to call it "The Audacity of Hope" and campaigned with the slogan "Change We Can Believe In."

Bruce Tasker 47 weeks 1 day ago
The leader of America has already recognized Genocide for what it is, and he confirmed that in Ankara. The important issue is that if Obama says the word Genocide in his 24th April address, then the Genocide bill has a good chance of passing through the US Congress and then the Senate, and equally as important, the Sargsyan / Nalbandian plan to establish Turkey's commission of historians will be thwarted.
Unfortunately the leaders of Armenia are not too interested in Armenia's painful history, or in Genocide recognition, they are hell bent in pursuit of the massive rewards they will receive if Obama does not say the 'G' word, including trade and other incentives.
Sargsyan and Nalbandian have spoken to Obama and to Hilary Clinton on this most sensitive issue, yet they have not said they formally requested that Obama stand by his promise and say the 'G' word this 24th April.
Has Sargsyan or Nalbandian ever stated that they will never agree to the Turkish commission of historians, or other such commission? No they have not, and for some unimaginable reason, they have kept quiet about what they said to Obama and Hilary Clinton.

State Department Press Release: Turkey and Armenia: Normalization of Relations
Robert Wood, Acting Department Spokesman, Office of the Spokesman, Washington, DC - April 22, 2009
"The United States welcomes the statement made by Armenia and Turkey on normalization of their bilateral relations. It has long been and remains the position of the United States that normalization should take place ...... without preconditions ..... and within a reasonable time frame. We urge Armenia and Turkey to proceed according to the agreed framework and road map. We look forward to working with both governments in support of normalization, and thus promote peace, security and stability in the whole region".
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2009/04/122065.htm
23rd April - Russian 'Novosti' television announced that Turkey and Armenia have reached agreement to establish diplomatic relations, and there is a document, which can be described as as ................ 'Historic'.
My Comment: It is not mentioned in the Turkish announcement that Turkey has backed down on any of its preconditions (although the State Department has gone further than the AP and said that normalization should take place ...... without preconditions) - and interesting that although the Armenian regime has apparently committed to a 'Document', it is keeping strangely quiet about the affair.
Armed with this official Turkish announcement (apparently supported by what Russian television describes as a 'document') the US will now be sufficiently confident of the process between Turkey and Armenia for Obama to back down on his promise to support Armenia's Genocide, and it follows that he will not be saying the 'G' word 24th April.

Matthew Bryza: Implicit 'Genocide' threat lies behind Turkey-Armenia breakthrough:
The first use of the symbolic word as a pressure point came directly from President Obama during his April 7 visit. In his talks with Erdoğan, according to sources, he said Turkey should reach an understanding with Armenia prior to April 24.
....... Turkey only swallowed the package after it was made clear that in the absence of a brokered deal Obama would use the word "genocide."
My Comment: This is confirmation from the US Deputy Secretary of State, who "spent 14 hours of marathon talks with the Armenians in Yerevan", that Obama did not say the word 'Genocide' because of an agreement between Yerevan's illegitimate regime and their Turkish counterparts.
But according to Armenia's Nalbandian, despite 14 hours of marathon talks with the Armenians in Yerevan, he did not know the agreement meant that Obama would not say 'Genocide' on the 24th.

The U.S. House of
jessonerik 17 weeks 15 hr ago
The U.S. House of Representatives introduced a resolution today that would officially recognize the Armenian genocide. It's the same resolution that's been introduced in three previous Congresses going back to 2003, causing minor controversies along the way in U.S.-Turkish relations. Turkey, you see, refuses to admit that a genocide ever took place.
All evidence (and there's plenty of it) aside, American presidents since Bill Clinton have willingly spoken of an Armenian genocide--but only on the campaign trail, before being elected student loans. Once elected, they've reverted to disgracefully coy ambiguities designed to appease Turkey.
On June 5, 1996, the House of Representatives went as far as adopting a measure that would have reduced aid to Turkey by $3 million (the amount Turkey was estimated to be spending in lobbying fees in the United States, much of it obviously, to deny its Armenian Holocaust) until the Turkish Government acknowledged the Armenian genocide and took steps to honor the memory of its victims. The measure never passed Congress.
The following year, Clinton (on April 24, 1998) said: "This year, as in the past, we join with Armenian-Americans throughout the nation in commemorating one of the saddest chapters in the history of this century, the deportations and massacres of a million and a half Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in the years 1915-1923." But he didn't use the word genocide.
Same with Bush on April 24, 2004, when he described the genocide as "the annihilation of as many as 1.5 million Armenians through forced exile and murder at the end of the Ottoman Empire."
