In addition to covering issues such as poverty, corruption, conflict, human rights and national minorities, one other theme The Caucasian Knot has concerned itself with — albeit on an earlier blog — has been rock music in the South Caucasus. Although most of that has been centered on Armenia, The Caucasian Knot has written about and photographed Georgian bands, but Azerbaijan unfortunately remains off-limits because of the unresolved conflict over Nagorno Karabakh.

Even though there have been festivals to promote rock music in the South Caucasus, Armenian bands can’t visit Azerbaijan because of the unresolved conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and vice-versa. That’s a pity given that during this year’s Eurovision Song Contest one band which stood out from the crowd was Unformal, an alternative rock band from Baku which really show a lot of promise. Unfortunately, perhaps having more talent than Eurovision deserves, they didn’t make it past Azerbaijan’s national finals.

Unformal is an Azerbaijan rock band from Baku. Unformal was founded in 2000 by Rustam Mammedov and Novruz Ismayilov. During the first years of its existance it was known as a hard rock band. In 2001 Unformal won Azerbaijan Rock Award Competition. In 2006 vocalist Delya and bass-guitar performer Looper joined to the band. Since then Unformal changed and now it is an alternative rock band. In march 2007 the single “Sonsuz yol” acclaimed by listeners, becoming the top-ranked song on the Azerbaijani, Ukrainian and Turkish charts. Unformal also took place in national final of Azerbaijan in Eurovision Song Contest 2008 and became second after Elnur Huseynov and Samir Javadzadeh.

Managing to sing in a variety of rock styles, their La-La-La Song was certainly fun and fresh and was the first song that brought the band to the attention of The Caucasian Knot. Nice track and very energetic.

Since then, however, some searches on YouTube show that the band had a harder beginning. Still great stuff and very encouraging to hear coming from Azerbaijan when you consider the stereotypes many people have about the region. Nice to hear something alternative to sit alongside the traditional.

Great stuff, but following the departure of other members of the band, they eventually changed direction with the addition of Delya and Looper, as their Facebook page explains.

[…] Soon Unformal recorded an experimental duet with the singer of “W/Omen” – Dilya, which turned out a real success and in 2006 she joined Unformal along with Looper (guitarist). In October 2006, represented by: Rustam and Dilya (vocal), Looper and Imran (guitars), Farida (bass) and Eugene (drums); renewed Unformal gives a solo concert with new band members and new musical concept. Sudden changes from hard to more alternative music were welcomed by the fans. “Ilk Suigest” becomes one of the best concerts the band ever played , and the beginning of new era in the history of Unformal. […]

It’s hardly surprising that the new line-up was greeted well by fans. Another entry into the Azerbaijani Eurovision National Final shows why. Great vocals and presence by Delya and a nice mix of the traditional with the mugham introduction. They also produce some softer songs with great videos which must be popular with local youth who might otherwise listen to Western or Russian pop music.

Definitely a band to keep an eye out for in the South Caucasus. They look interesting live as well. It’s just a pity that it’s uncertain whether they’d ever be able to play in Yerevan. Still, as usual, there’s aways Tbilisi to take on the role of the cultural center of the South Caucasus where Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Georgians can come together.

After quickly glancing at the Russian-language Day.az online publication, I came across to an overwhelming number of articles dealing with violence again women in Azerbaijan.  This week alone, the publication covers a woman killed by her  nephew, a man in prison for having killed his wife, a mother beaten to death by her son, and [...]

If your purpose is to quiet the masses, to prevent mass unrest and violence, to secure the safety of a city, then why would you work on targeting individuals via a sniper?

Why not use smoke bombs? Why not just fire into the air? Why not try to negotiate?
[Which, by the by, is what LTP did when the mob tried to take down the gates of the Presidential building in 1996, and that was after he found out members of Parliament had been kidnapped.]

That's not to mention the real way to deal with the situation, the unspeakable way, that is, to deal with the underlying cause.

Երեկ տեղի ունեցավ «Արարատ» - «Փյունիկ» ֆուրտբոլային հանդիպումը: Նախքան խաղի սկսելը արդեն հարցեր ու կասկածներ էին առաջացել: «Արարատ»-ի ֆուտբոլասերները դժգոհում էին, որ տոմսերը անսպասելիորեն թանկացել էին: Շատերը կարծում էին, որ դա միայն և միայն արված է իրենց՝ «Արարատ»-ի երկրպագուներին դաշտից հեռու պահելու և այդպիսով «Արարատ»-ի խաղացողների ինքնավստահության վրա ազդելու համար:

Խնդիրը այն է, որ կա մի մեծ  կոնֆլիկտ (conflict of interest): Բանը այն է, որ ՀՖՖ նախագահ Ռուբեն Հայրապետյանը, նույն ինքը նեմեց ռուբոն հանդիսանում է  ՚Փյունիկՙ ակումբի հովանավորը: Նկատի ունենալով, որ այս նույն կերպարը նաև հայտնի է մարտի մեկյան ջարդարության իր բուռն դերակատարմամբ և որ սա ավազակապետության որջի կարկառուն դեմքերից մեկն է արդար խաղի ապահովումը կլիներ զարմանահրաշ մի բան: Եթե նույնիսկ պետք լիներ նա թերևս գործի կդներ իր սափրագլուխներին ինչպես արեց դա Փետրվարի 19-ին և մարտի 1-ին:

Եվ այսպիսով սպասվածի պես երեկվա խաղը լի էր օրինախախտումներով և մրցավարի բացարձակ Փյունիկակենտրոն որոշումներով: Թերևս «Արարատ»-ի շվեցարահայ հովանավորների աչքերը վերջապես բացվելու վրա են: Ավազակապետության գոյության ամեն մի օրը մեր երկրին հասցնում է ահավոր վնասներ, որոնք շտկելու համար կպահանջվեն տարիներ:

Սակայն ոսկե հանդիպումից 2 օր առաջ ՀՖՖ-ն հայտարարել էր. ՚Որոշվել է` վերը նշված թիմերին խաղային հավասար պայմաններ ապահովելու համար, նախորդ խաղում զգուշացում ստացած ֆուտբոլիստների որակազրկումը համարել չեղյալՙ: ՚Արարատումՙ որակազրկված էր միայն Հրայր Մկոյանը, որին թեեւ ՀՖՖ-ն իրավունք էր տվել դուրս գալ խաղադաշտ, սակայն ՚Արարատըՙ նրան չէր հայտավորել հանդիպմանը, իսկ ահա ՚Փյունիկիՙ խաղացողները թիմի մեկնարկային կազմում էին: ՚Կանոնակարգում նման կետ չկա, որ խաղացողների որակազրկումը հենց այդպես հանենՙ, - նշեց Գեւորգ Քամալյանը:

Writer Hrant Dink was the first victim, killed last year because some in Turkey could not tolerate what he stood for. To nationalists, he was a traitor.

In a country where every citizen is defined as a Turk, Hrant Dink defined himself as ethnic Armenian. That was already subversive to some. But Mr Dink went further.

He wrote about the expulsion and killing of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman Armenians from eastern Turkey in 1915. To Armenians, and others, that was genocide - a claim Ankara vigorously denies. [...]

'Ergenekon' trial

In that battle for democracy, Hrant Dink was on the frontline. Now there is another sign the fight will be fierce.

Eighty ultra-nationalists are currently on trial just outside Istanbul, accused of plotting to overthrow the government and block democratic reforms.

The prosecutor claims the group - known as Ergenekon - planned a campaign of murder and violence. It was meant to create chaos - and force the military to step in and take control.

Hrant Dink believed Turkey could change. His vision was of a truly democratic republic and the EU accession process was a vital part of that.

To his widow, such change now looks a long way off.

"[Turkey] doesn't want people to express their ethnic identity, or live freely. That doesn't fit the founding ideas of this country,” Rakel says.

"Turkey needs time to adjust. The EU process may help, but my husband's death is their biggest loss."

I attended State Minister Teimuraz Iakobashvili’s talk held at the Institute for European Studies at TSU on November 14. Overall, the talk was the first talk in Georgia I have seen where the majority of people who attended were Georgian students. Despite the fact that the audience was overwhelmingly Georgian, Minister Iakobashivili spoke entirely in English. Additionally, the Minister was very generous with his time and engaged in an extensive Q&A session with students who also asked questions only in English

Iakobashvili’s main points (in note format) are as follows

1. Russia is in a state of decay. This decay will take time, but things are bad in Russia. They lost political and economic ground and the war revealed Russia’s military weakness. According to Iakobashvili.

From a military perspective

• Over 2,000 Russian soldiers were killed
• The 60 number quotes by Russians were only from Yamadayev’s troops
• Georgia destroyed Khrulyev’s column included 30/35 armored vehicles each carrying at least 8 people for a minimum of 240 dead from this column alone
• Russia suffered major hardware losses including: 17 airplane, 1 strategic bomber, 3 helicopters
• Russian soldiers are starving in Akhalgori and have resorted to raiding local Ossetians
  

From an economic perspective

• Gas prices have led to major budget shortfalls in Russia
• Europe will not ultimately be reliant on Russian gas
• No liquefied natural gas terminal and no ports for them in Russia
• China can get gas from Central Asia
  

From a political perspective

• Demographic tides are promoting separatism
• Only Moscow, St. Petersburg and Muslim dominated parts of Russia are growing. Muslim areas in Russia are demonstrating more ethnic homogeneity and anti-Russian sentiment
• High birth rates in Muslim Russia are leading to more unemployment and dissatisfaction
• 15% of Russian conscripts from the North Caucasus—many refusing to eat pork and stationed in Siberia
• Ingushetia has all signs of civil war
• Ossetians and particularly Abkhaz are angry at Russia
• Russia has upset Abkhaz political dominance by either 1) Installing a Russian second in command 0r 2) Directly taking over certain operations
  

2. Russia is angry now and was angry before and this is particularly dangerous for Georgia in the coming winter months

Russia was angry before because Georgia’s strategy of “soft power was working”

• Sanakoyev and Upper Kodori were successes
• “Boney M, swimming pools and cinemas” were a success
  

Russia is angry now because of all the bad results of the war

• This makes Russia very dangerous in the short term

3. Georgia’s strategy going forward – “Crisis gives you opportunity”

Build bridges to Abkhaz and Ossetians

• Georgia has a mission to save Abkhaz and Ossetians from Russian domination
  

Georgia is not a member of NATO and doesn’t have the “goddamn plan” MAP

• But MAP was only created recently under specific circumstances and should not be for Georgia
• A special GAP or specific technical goals should be given to Georgia – it should be a political decision
• Better than NATO, however, would be two American brigades in Georgia
• Georgia should “fight when the fight makes sense” – Georgia should not argue with the EU resuming talks with Russia – but should seek to influence the process
  

Q & A and Other issues

Q: Why didn’t the Georgian Government heed the European Commission’s recommendations about Upper Kodori and South Ossetia?

A: The EU is a “status quo” organization. “We would have to abandon our people” if Georgia listened to them.

Q: What about Georgia and Georgia’s future image and what about Swiss inquiry?

A: Russia saw they were getting beat in the press. Iakobashvili has a list of PR agencies Russia has engaged in. Russia allowed the NYT to swallow a story from a guy who no longer works for the OSCE. Russia is also influencing press freedom abroad. Berlusconi has censored debate in Italy.

Georgia should work hard to build relations with Obama’s foreign policy team

As a result of the war, the level of awareness about Georgia has significantly increased.

Q: Does government have scenarios, even worse case scenarios?

A: Yes. The government learns quickly. Reservist system needs to change. The war showed MANAGEMENT problems. The reservists were not the problem. The war showed us “who is worth what”

Q: What about the Armenians in Abkhazia. Who do they support?

A: They leave the politics to the Abkhaz, though the status quo has been good to them, since they generally live in the north of Abkhazia. 30 or 31 out of 35 members of Abkhaz parliament are ethnic Abkhaz. This is called “apartheid.”

Q: What about the EU Monitors?

A: It would be better if they were armed and in Tskhinvali, But they are much better than the OSCE or UN, because they are free from Russian influence. UN cannot help solve the problem.

Q: What about the Geneva negotiations?

A: Georgia expects 3 countries (US, Russia, Georgia) and three int’l organizations (EU, UN, OSCE). They will not accept SO or Abkhazia. Russia can have whatever technical experts they want on their team. But there should be parity, so if Kokoity is attending, so should Sanakoyev.

Q What is with the UN?

A: UNOMIG was asked to leave Kodori. To justify this, they issued a “ridiculous report.”
UN will not play a significant role politically because of Russia, but they have been very helpful on the humanitarian front.
