(A former writer, member of the Karabakh Committee, member of the parliament of Armenia, Minister of Interior and Mayor of Yerevan, Vano Sirateghyan has now been in hiding for a number of years, avoiding an arrest warrant based on trumped up charges by the Kocharyan administration.)
The Armenian prefers his historical homeland to the real one.
He does so because a historic homeland does not require care. That homeland does not demand taxes, sweat or defense.
The magic of that homeland consists in the fact that one does not need to live there.
And for centuries we have turned our homeland, piece by piece, into a historic one, to which we have been attached with a collective, non-binding, heartfelt love.
The Armenian prefers the love for the non-existent to a collective existence.
For centuries having turned our homeland, piece by piece, into a historic homeland, we have strengthened our neighbors and then declared them enemies; then we have complained about our neighbors, cursed against the small size of our real homeland, and dreamt about a powerful, crusader army to return and walk over our homeland, our historic homeland, our neighbors; and, may be this time, that army will stay forever.
